Stories published in el Nuevo Herald

El nuevo Herald is the Miami Herald's "sister publication." The paper does not merely cover local events in Spanish, but reports on international occurrences that are important to the population — especially since Miami is often deemed the "capital of Latin America."

From alligators and crime to hurricanes and protests, I covered a broad range of topics and wrote over 123 articles throughout my two consecutive summers as a newsroom intern.

You can read all of them here.

During my first summer at el Nuevo, we had a brainstorming session where the team came up with ideas to promote the paper's coverage through social media. As a result, "El Noticierito," a video containing a summary of the day's most important news, was born.

Because of COVID-19, "El Noticierito" became a weekly news summary, especially since reporters were working remotely. However, I had always wanted to participate in this project, so, along with my fellow two other interns, we took it upon ourselves to produce the videos in a daily matter. I count this experience as one of my favorites during my internship, as I was able to delve into visual reporting and video production.

To create the videos, we had to pick the five most important news articles, making sure that they combined local, national, and international events. It was especially necessary to understand the audience's interests, especially since an important percentage consists on Venezuelans and Cubans who rely on the paper to overcome their countries' censorship.
